I lucked out and found a good host. But I've been down the road where the cost was pennies - but I never got ANY support and my website was down every morning and email sucked.
Basically, hosts are not making any money by providing you with this type of "free" services (unless they have ads plastered all over the place - which i HATE) and so, they don't care what happens to you and you will get "nothing" in return. By that I mean support, support, support, and no site maintenance or updates, etc. - without those things might as well just put up a static page with a "hello world" on it :)You know at one time I would agree completely with this. But I found the best free host you could ask for. They have there own irc server to answer questions and they encourage people to create their own channels. They offer all server side languages, 250mb of storage and 2gb of bandwaith a month. You can get double of both if you get 30 hits a day. They offer cpanel with all the features that come with that. I've never noticed lengthy downtime at all. The best part is they have no ads whatsoever. It may not be worth it for a large business but for amateurs or small businesses it's quite good. Just my thought.
www.xmgfree.comYea I like I said they have XMG guys on their irc server 24/7 to answer your questions. I've emailed them several times and got helpful responses in less then 24 hours. The drawback is sometimes they have periods where no users can sign up.But is the support there...even a hobby site needs to keep visitors by having their doors open so to speak. Maybe as a good testing server site mabye, will have to check it out, but since I'm my own host here, I have to play the devils advocate somewhat and be suspicious.
